Who is Ali Akbar Ahmadian?
Last night, Ali Shamkhani resigned from his position as Secretary of the Supreme National Security Council after ten years. Although this news has not been officially announced, this morning, news of Ali Akbar Ahmadian’s appointment as the new Secretary of the Supreme National Security Council was released, giving credibility to the rumors. Who is Ali Akbar Ahmadian and what is his track record?
Ali Shamkhani, the former Secretary of the Supreme National Security Council, who served in this position for ten years, resigned from his position last night. Immediately after news of his resignation spread in the media, Ali Akbar Ahmadian was appointed as the new Secretary of the Supreme National Security Council by Ibrahim Raisi.
Who is Ahmadian?
Ali Akbar Ahmadian, the new Secretary of the Supreme National Security Council, was previously serving as the head of the Strategic Center of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps. He is known as one of the important military figures of the IRGC. He had positions close to the thirteenth government led by Ibrahim Raisi and is likely to move in line with the government’s policies.
Education and Academic Activities
As mentioned, Ali Akbar Ahmadian is one of the commanders of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps. He was born in 1340 Solar Hijri in the city of Babak, Kerman province. Ahmadian has a dental degree from Tehran University, and he also holds a PhD in General Dentistry. Additionally, he has a degree in Strategic Management from the National Defense University, where he obtained his doctorate. One of Ahmadian’s academic activities includes serving as the commander of Imam Hussein University from 1384 to 1386.
Military Record
Ali Akbar Ahmadian has a long history of military service in the country’s armed forces. From 1363 to 1364, he served as the head of the Noah’s Ark Headquarters in Bushehr. Furthermore, he held the position of the Joint Staff Commander of the Navy of the Revolutionary Guard from 1364 to 1368 for a period of four years. Ahmadian also served as the deputy commander of the Revolutionary Guard Navy for eight years, from 1368 to 1376.
Ali Akbar Ahmadian was appointed as the commander of the Navy of the Revolutionary Guards (Sepah) after reaching the position of Minister of Defense in the first government of Seyyed Mohammad Khatami, replacing Ali Shamkhani. Therefore, it can be said that this is the second time that Ali Akbar Ahmadian replaces Ali Shamkhani, once as the commander of the Navy of Sepah and now as the Secretary of the Supreme National Security Council of the country. Both experienced commanders of the country’s navy are not unfamiliar with this occurrence.
Ahmadian continued his activities as the commander of the Navy of Sepah until the end of 1379. After that, he was appointed as the head of the Joint Staff of the Revolutionary Guards in 1379 and continued his work in this position until 1386. In 1386, Ahmadian was appointed as the head of the Strategic Center of the Revolutionary Guards by the order of Seyyed Ali Khamenei, the Supreme Leader of the Islamic Republic. He continued his work until last night when he started working as the Secretary of the Supreme National Security Council appointed by Ebrahim Raisi, the head of the thirteenth government.
Political Positions
Ali Akbar Ahmadian has been under international sanctions since the beginning of the nuclear sanctions. He has been targeted for sanctions since 2007, during the initial period of nuclear sanctions that were imposed in 2007, due to his military background and his position in the IRGC.
Ahmadian’s political positions have not been very clear to the media, and there are not many statements from him in the country’s media. However, based on limited statements and rumors, it can be said that he is more moderate and mild-mannered compared to other IRGC commanders. Although his political positions have a close proximity to Ibrahim Raisi and his government, he is generally recognized among the IRGC commanders as a moderate individual. However, compared to Ali Shamkhani, he appears to be more hardline and closer to the thirteenth government.
It should not be forgotten that before the news of Ahmadian’s appointment, some sources reported the finalization of Saeed Jalili’s appointment as the Secretary of the Supreme National Security Council. However, without wasting time, it seems that Ibrahim Raisi, as if waiting for Ali Shamkhani’s retirement, immediately appointed Ali Akbar Ahmadian as the Secretary of the Supreme National Security Council.
