400 fossils, dating back 10 million years, were discovered in Maragheh.
The head of the Environmental Protection Department of Maragheh stated that the age of these fossils goes back to 10 million years ago, and in terms of antiquity, what has been explored in Maragheh so far is more significant.
According to the Director General of Environmental Protection of East Azerbaijan, the first phase of this excavation was carried out with a budget of 350 million tomans, and 500 million tomans have been allocated for the second phase of fossil research and exploration.
He said that the extracted fossils have been transferred to the Maragheh Paleontology Research Center for further study.
Continuing, he said that 6 billion tomans have been allocated this year to complete the country’s Paleontology Research Center in Maragheh.
The head of the Environmental Protection Department of Maragheh also stated that the age of these fossils goes back to 10 million years ago, and in terms of antiquity, what has been explored in Maragheh so far is more significant.
Zare added that most of the obtained fossils include the skull, jaw, limbs, and intact pelvis of herbivores.
He further added that drilling and fossil extraction in the Ahagh region of Maragheh has started for the first time since October 12th.
