Explanation of the Judiciary about issuing criminal complaints against pardoned defendants

Masoud Staeeshi, the spokesperson of the Judiciary, addressed reporters’ questions during today’s press conference regarding the reason for reissuing criminal complaints for some of the released prisoners who were mostly arrested during the protests following the killing of Mahsa Amini.

He stated that a convicted or accused person who has been pardoned will not have their case reopened for past issues unless there is a reduction in their sentence.

Mr. Staeeshi also mentioned that those who have had cases formed against them have definitely committed new crimes, and new charges are the result of their actions.

Last February, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, the Supreme Leader of the Islamic Republic of Iran, agreed to the proposal of the Judiciary to pardon and reduce the sentences of tens of thousands of defendants and convicts.

This conditional pardon, which required prisoners to express remorse, was met with many negative reactions.

Amnesty International stated that the pardon agreed upon by the Supreme Leader is aimed at suppressing international protests.
