Two power plants in Iran have been taken out of service

The Payam newspaper reports that two power plants in Iran have been taken out of service simultaneously due to exceeding their capacity. At the same time, a spokesperson for the Ministry of Energy has announced the possibility of breaking the country’s historical electricity consumption record due to increased heat this week.

According to an informed source close to the Ministry of Energy, whose name was not disclosed, the newspaper stated on Tuesday, August 1st that in addition to the intensity of the heat, a decrease in electricity production was also one of the reasons for the government’s decision to close on Thursday and Friday, August 2nd and 3rd.

Ali Rabiei, the spokesperson for the government of Ebrahim Raisi, tweeted on Tuesday that this decision was made based on the unprecedented heat in recent days and the recommendation of the Ministry of Health.

The source of the Payam newspaper said that the intensity of the heat and increased electricity consumption in recent days caused the hydroelectric power plants of Karun Dam 3 and 4 to produce more electricity than their capacity. These power plants have sometimes generated electricity for more than twenty hours a day and, as a result, have faced a shortage of water resources.
