Iranian hackers infiltrated the US election website in 2020

US officials said on Monday in a cybersecurity conference that the country’s military discovered in 2020 that a group of Iranian hackers had penetrated the website of a local government on the verge of announcing election results. They claim that this cyber intrusion was neutralized before the vote count.

These officials stated that although the voting machines and actual votes were not affected by the breach, the hackers could have taken the website offline or posted fake results, which would have undermined public trust in the actual outcome.

According to The Washington Post, General William Hartman, the commander of the US Cyber Command’s National Mission Force, said at the annual RSA conference in San Francisco that this development could have created the perception of manipulated votes.

He did not specify which website was targeted, and The Washington Post reports that the issue of Iranian hackers infiltrating this website was confidential until now.

Mr. Hartman said that this group of hackers is known as the Advanced Persistent Threat 33 (APT33).
