100 Trillion Toman Loss Due to Internet Outage

20 days of internet outage and a 100 trillion toman loss, a crisis threatening the digital economy and the lives of millions of Iranians.

As the number of days of international internet outage approaches 20, the statements by the Minister of Communications regarding the astronomical losses from these outages have caught the attention of the media and economic activists. Approximately 5 trillion tomans in damage is inflicted on the country’s economy daily, a figure that reaches about 100 trillion tomans over 20 days.

To understand the scale of this loss, it is enough to know that this amount could pay the annual subsidies for over 21 million people or cover the annual salaries of 800,000 people. Even with this amount, one could provide 200,000 housing loans of 500 million tomans or 330,000 marriage loans of 300 million tomans. This loss is equivalent to one percent of the GDP of 1403 and one-fifth of the country’s development budget.
