Antonio Guterres, Secretary-General of the United Nations, is facing a crisis in the Middle East

António Guterres, the Secretary-General of the United Nations, stated that the Middle East is on the brink of a crisis.

On Thursday, António Guterres, the Secretary-General of the United Nations, presented a grim picture of the situation in the Middle East and warned that escalating tensions over the conflict in Gaza and Iran’s attack on Israel could escalate into a full-scale regional confrontation.

Guterres, in a Security Council meeting attended by several foreign ministers, including those of Jordan and Iran, said that the Middle East is on the brink of a crisis. In recent days, we have witnessed a dangerous escalation of tensions both in rhetoric and in action.

He emphasized that a miscalculation, an inappropriate connection, a mistake could lead to an unimaginable event and destructive conflict. He urged all parties to exercise maximum restraint.

Mr. Guterres condemned both the attack on the Iranian consulate and the mass drone and missile strikes on Israel, stating that the drone attack was a serious escalation of tensions. He said it is time to end this bloody cycle of revenge and it must come to an end.
