Javid Rahman called the Islamic Republic’s treatment of the Baha’i minority in Iran a crime against humanity and genocide.
Javid Rahman, the United Nations special rapporteur on human rights violations in Iran, described the Islamic Republic’s treatment of the Baha’i minority in Iran in the 1980s as a crime against humanity and genocide, calling for international investigations into this matter.
Mr. Rahman, who will soon hand over this mandate to another UN rapporteur, released a report on the situation of Baha’is in Iran on the first of August.
In this report, he wrote that since the 1980s, the Baha’is in Iran have been targeted with the intention of genocide, and harassment, persecution, and attacks on religious, ethnic, and linguistic minorities and political dissidents have continued without accountability for the perpetrators.
Mr. Rahman added in his report that there should be no exemption from punishment for such gross human rights violations, regardless of when they were committed.
This is not the first time that the persecution of Baha’is in Iran has been called a crime against humanity.
