Mr. Jalalian, the deputy for human rights of the Ministry of Justice in Iran, has officially stated that the annual financial turnover of the waste mafia is 3 trillion tomans.
Mr. Jalalian emphasized that the unofficial statistics are even higher than this number, and he said that the root cause of waste dumping is the illegal waste mafia whose activities are considered a crime and have inflicted wounds on society, disrupted the city’s landscape, and violated citizens’ rights.
Reza Mohammadi, the CEO of the Waste Management Organization, also mentioned in the memorandum of cooperation between the Ministry of Justice and the Tehran Municipality, aimed at combating waste dumping, that there is competition among 154 waste contractors in Tehran. He said, ‘We have selected one contractor through a tender process to oversee all contractors and currently we have a total of 14 major contractors.’
Mr. Mohammadi also emphasized that the waste mafia uses cheap labor, which often includes children, to secure their interests, and sometimes they provide drugs to children instead of money for their work.
