A Japanese astronaut will be the first non-American to land on the moon
U.S. President Joe Biden announced on Wednesday that a Japanese astronaut will be the first non-American to go to the moon on one of NASA’s Artemis missions.
Mr. Biden, in a joint press conference with Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida, said that two Japanese astronauts will join future American space missions, and one of them will land on the moon as the first non-American.
The Japanese Prime Minister welcomed this news as a major achievement and announced that his country will provide a rover for the program in exchange.
NASA had previously announced that the Artemis mission would take the first woman and the first person of color to the moon. According to reports, the first mission to take astronauts to the lunar surface is planned for 2026.
