A Japanese astronaut will be the first non-American to land on the moon.

President Joe Biden announced on Thursday that a Japanese astronaut will participate in one of NASA’s Artemis missions to the moon, becoming the first non-American to do so.

Mr. Biden, in a joint press conference with Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida, stated that two Japanese astronauts will join future American space missions, with one of them landing on the moon as the first non-American.

The Japanese Prime Minister welcomed this news as a great achievement and announced that his country will provide a Mars rover for this program in return.

NASA had previously announced that in the Artemis mission, the first woman and the first person of color will land on the moon. According to reports, the first mission to bring astronauts to the moon’s surface is scheduled for 2026.
