Amnesty International: The Taliban lacks the will and ability to punish its own members
Amnesty International has called on the United Nations Human Rights Council to immediately establish an independent investigative mechanism in Afghanistan to uncover the facts regarding the allegations against Taliban members.
According to the organization, over the past 18 months, Taliban officials have shown that they lack the will and ability to investigate the actions of their members, which severely violate the human rights of women, girls, and religious and ethnic minorities.
This proposed mechanism could complement the mission of Richard Bennett, the United Nations special rapporteur on the human rights situation in Afghanistan, and the United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA).
Amnesty International states that the Taliban has consistently and openly demonstrated that they lack the will to conduct impartial, independent, and effective investigations into human rights violations by its members, and it is time for the international community to follow up repeated public statements with tangible action.
