Bibi’s Magic in Congress

United States of America and Netanyahu

Benjamin Netanyahu, in his speech at the US Congress, stated that the clash between civilization and barbarism is ongoing in the Middle East.

Nancy Pelosi and Joe Biden did not attend the Congress.

While Benjamin Netanyahu delivered his controversial speech inside the US Congress hall, thousands of protesters outside protested against his speech.

Police used pepper spray against the protesters who were shouting ‘Netanyahu, you can’t hide.’

You are in the midst of genocide. This was the fourth time that the Israeli Prime Minister, as always, spoke at the invitation of American lawmakers.

Netanyahu, in a fiery speech, called for complete victory and emphasized that what is happening is not a clash of civilizations but between barbarism and civilization, between those who glorify death and those who honor life.

With much encouragement from the audience, he reminded of reasons why the United States should continue to support the war against Hamas, stating that it is in the Middle East where Iran is challenging America. He added, ‘Give us the tools to finish the job.’

The Prime Minister did not hesitate to criticize the protesters who criticized him in front of the Capitol Hill, calling them wasteful fools who he believes are affiliated with Tehran.

Prime Minister Netanyahu spoke in Congress while several noticeably empty seats were present.

Among the empty seats was Kamala Harris, a potential Democratic presidential candidate who had participated in an election rally in Indiana, Nancy Pelosi, and hundreds of Democratic representatives.

Even Vice President Mike Pence was campaigning elsewhere in the White House, and among the distinguished guests, the prominent billionaire Elon Musk stood out.

A war criminal in Congress.

Netanyahu’s visit to the US capital comes as the International Criminal Court, which the US does not officially recognize, is considering a request for the arrest of the Prime Minister and other Israeli officials and senior Hamas leaders on charges of war crimes and crimes against humanity.

In addition, last week, the International Court of Justice deemed Israel’s occupation of Palestinian territories illegal and effectively annexed, a situation that must end as soon as possible.

Protests against Netanyahu’s interference had started in Washington since Wednesday, following these two statements.

A group of progressive Jews occupied the Cannon House building, which houses congressional offices, demanding a halt to arms transfers to Israel.

This tension led to the arrest of two hundred people, with a note from the police reminding that protests inside congressional buildings are illegal.

On Friday, April 26, Netanyahu went to the White House to meet with US President Joe Biden, and as expected, Kamala Harris also met with him. Donald Trump, the Republican leader, announced on his social media that he would meet Netanyahu on Saturday morning at his private club in Mar-a-Lago, Florida.

Hostages

Although Netanyahu’s speech was cheered several times in Congress, there were also those present who avoided it, including the families of hostages still held in Gaza.

In his first speech in the United States after the October 7 Hamas attack, in which more than 1200 Israelis were killed and 250, including 120 prisoners, are still held hostage, Netanyahu made no mention of ceasefire negotiations with Hamas.

He alone said that Israel is engaged in intense efforts and added that they will continue to exert pressure and wait for the best possible conditions.

Some families of hostages have renewed their request to the Israeli government, which has been ongoing for months. They demanded an agreement to be reached as soon as possible.

Daniel Notra, whose brother Omar is one of the eight American citizens still in captivity, told the House committee that it does not seem that the urgency of this matter will affect him.

While protests in Israel for reaching an agreement and returning the hostages have now taken on the color of real anti-government protests, there has been no discussion on this issue in Congress.

Criticism raised by the families of the hostages was also taken up by Yair Lapid of the opposition Labor Party, and in an op-ed he wrote, ‘Shame on you, a one-hour speech without even mentioning a single conciliatory sentence about the abducted individuals will be done.’

Has anything changed for Benjamin Netanyahu?

Netanyahu’s controversial speech in the US Congress was overshadowed by events that disrupted the current US election campaign.

After the armed attack on Donald Trump, Joe Biden’s decision to withdraw his candidacy practically transformed the competition for the White House, and he also left the Israeli Prime Minister in a state of uncertainty.

Netanyahu, who had repeatedly ignored the requests of the US President and his proposal for a ceasefire in Gaza in hopes of Trump’s return to the White House, found himself exactly on the days of Biden’s withdrawal and the replacement of his deputy Kamala Harris for the upcoming US elections in Washington.

This event practically increases the Democrats’ chances of winning the November elections.

Harris, who was absent from Netanyahu’s speech due to a prior commitment, denied sanctioning the speech, but in recent months, she has raised criticisms of Israel’s conduct in the Gaza war multiple times.

The Vice President remains in the shadow of a man who, despite his difficult relations with Benjamin Netanyahu, is explicitly defined as the most pro-Israeli US President.

Now that Harris is a potential Democratic nominee, according to Senator Chris Murphy, who worked with the deputy of the Senate Intelligence Committee, changes are on the way. Murphy said President Biden brought a long history of relationship with Netanyahu and a decade of experience in US-Israel relations to the White House.

But now it seems that it is time to reassess that relationship and have a new look at how to deal with Israel’s political landscape, which is sliding further right than we had imagined.

Netanyahu’s speech, instead of seeking dialogue to end the war, escalated the level of confrontation, radicalized the tone, and pushed all issues to the extreme. He went beyond clashes of civilizations and talked about a possible unified civilization against what is perceived as barbarism.

The reference to lack of civilization clearly relates to Hamas, but it is a fact that the entire population of Gaza Strip are victims of war and collective punishment.

Moreover, he simply ignored tens of thousands of civilian casualties, as well as hostages and their families. These rhetoric has a striking resemblance to the rhetoric of good versus evil that George W.

After September 11, 2001, Bush used the excuse of engaging in the region to help Biden must also warn his ally Israel of the dangers of such a narrative by recalling the tragic attack on the Twin Towers and comparing it to the bloody events of October 7. He tried to prevent the occurrence of unfortunate events and the escalation of tensions in the Middle East by reminding the United States’ mistake in a blind reaction that led to twenty years of war.
