US and Turkish officials announced today, Friday, March 29th, that President Joe Biden is scheduled to host Recep Tayyip Erdogan at the White House on May 9th. This will be Erdogan’s first visit to the US since 2019, when Donald Trump was the President.
According to Reuters, relations between these two NATO member countries, which had been strained for years due to differences on a wide range of issues, have been on a path to improvement since Ankara approved Sweden’s NATO membership request in January, after a 20-month delay.
According to Anadolu Agency, Ibrahim Kalin, the head of Turkey’s National Intelligence Organization, will meet with some members of the US House of Representatives today, Friday, March 29th.
One of the two Turkish officials who confirmed the planned trip in May said that this visit will serve as an opportunity window for bilateral relations between the US and Turkey.
