Bitter memory of the Seine River in the minds of Olympic athletes
Despite the extensive advertising by the organizers of the Paris Olympics and the efforts of city and national authorities to highlight the attractiveness of this important river in the city of Paris, the pollution of this historical and important river in France was a major mystery that had been a concern for a long time before the start of the games.
French authorities extensively promoted a hefty €14 billion budget for cleaning and ensuring the health of the river water for hosting aquatic sports competitions. The mayor even swam in the river to ensure that it wouldn’t pose any problems for swimmers. Besides various issues in athletes’ food and accommodation, which may not be something new and complaints in this regard have been present in all Olympic editions, the pollution of the Seine River was an exceptional issue. The whispers of water pollution turned serious when a Belgian female athlete fell ill after competing in this river, and many athletes openly stated that although they compete in this river, they are certain that the water is contaminated. Recent tests conducted by the French water company confirmed that on many days during the aquatic sports competitions in the Seine River, the water was not healthy and usable for athletes. This proven fact leaves a bitter memory of the Paris Olympics.
