Blinken and the Delayed Game Against War

The virtual ministerial meeting of the Group of Seven on Monday concluded with a statement and special remarks aimed at the efforts of industrialized countries to reduce tensions in the Middle East and contain the Israel-Iran crisis.

Some aspects of the content of this public meeting have been disclosed, and according to reporters, the US Secretary of State has warned his counterparts that an Iranian attack is likely to occur in the next 24 to 48 hours. Various officials from US allied countries have been exerting pressure on Iran and Israel in recent hours, following coordination with Biden’s foreign policy team, to contain the scope of conflicts in any possible way.

The conversation between the Jordanian Foreign Minister and Iranian authorities in Tehran took place while King Abdullah of Jordan was negotiating with the French President. What has been narrated from the Monday session reflects a relative despair about the possibility of fully preventing an Iranian attack, and what seems to be a priority is containing its consequences and limiting Israel’s response.
