Blinken and the Delaying Game Against War

The virtual meeting of the G7 foreign ministers on Sunday resulted in a statement and special remarks aimed at the efforts of the industrialized countries to reduce tensions in the Middle East and contain the scope of the crisis between Israel and Iran.

Some aspects of the content of this meeting have been made public, and according to reporters, the U.S. Secretary of State warned his counterparts that an Iranian attack is likely to occur within the next 24 to 48 hours. Various officials from the U.S. allied countries have been applying pressure on Iran and Israel in recent hours, in coordination with Biden’s foreign policy team, to contain the scope of the conflicts by any possible means.

The conversation between the Jordanian Foreign Minister and Iranian officials in Tehran took place while King Abdullah of Jordan was consulting with the French President. What has been reported from Sunday’s meeting is a relative disappointment in the possibility of fully containing and preventing an Iranian attack, and what seems to be prioritized is containing its consequences and limiting Israel’s response.
