Conditional Approval of the Expediency Discernment Council for Iran’s Accession to the CFT Convention
Simultaneously with the increase in international pressures on the Islamic Republic following the trigger mechanism and the return of sanctions, the Expediency Discernment Council agreed to Iran’s accession to the CFT.
The spokesperson for the Expediency Discernment Council announced on Wednesday, September 30, that the members of this council have agreed to Iran’s accession to the CFT.
Mohsen Dehnavi wrote on X that after holding four sessions in the chamber and joint commission meetings, the Expediency Discernment Council conditionally agreed to Iran’s accession to the CFT Convention in today’s session.
The Convention on the Suppression of the Financing of Terrorism, known as CFT, is an international convention adopted by the United Nations in 1999 to combat the financing of terrorism and is considered one of the key documents in the framework of the Financial Action Task Force (FATF) recommendations for combating money laundering and terrorist financing.
On Wednesday, May 14, the Expediency Discernment Council approved Iran’s accession to the international convention against transnational organized crime, known as the Palermo Convention.
The Islamic Republic had previously refrained from joining this international convention, and in recent years, due to not joining the CFT and Palermo conventions, it was placed on the FATF blacklist.
In 2018, the Islamic Consultative Assembly approved the dual bills of Palermo and CFT, but ten days later, the leadership deemed these two bills unacceptable, and the Guardian Council also found issues with these bills, sending them to the Expediency Discernment Council for review, which then refrained from approving the mentioned bills.
