Former head of the referees committee, Khodadad Afsharian, currently serving time in prison, has confessed to the involvement of some referees and assistant referees in the Premier League in the corruption and match-fixing case in Iranian football.
According to Jomjome newspaper affiliated with the Islamic Republic of Iran Broadcasting, Afsharian has confessed that these match-fixing incidents have disrupted the balance in the Premier League and First Division in recent years. It is said that the judiciary of the Islamic Republic is vigorously pursuing corruption in the referees’ community.
Khodadad Afsharian’s confessions have implicated several Premier League clubs in corruption. He has confessed to at least 15 specific cases of match-fixing and has revealed the role of referees in influencing match results.
Jomjome writes that the important question being raised is whether the clubs involved in match-fixing will be relegated to lower leagues. So far, no one has a definitive answer to this crucial and key question.
