Trump’s Controversial Pardon Frees Former Honduran President Convicted of Drug Trafficking
Juan Orlando Hernández, the former president of Honduras who was imprisoned in the US for drug trafficking, has been released from prison thanks to a pardon by Donald Trump.
He was serving a 45-year sentence for using his position to traffic hundreds of tons of cocaine to the US.
His wife thanked the US president in a post on X.
The full results of the recent presidential election in Honduras have not yet been announced.
In this election, Nasry Asfura, the candidate from Hernández’s National Party, is leading by a few hundred votes over his rival Salvador Nasralla.
Donald Trump has supported Mr. Asfura, who is a far-right candidate.
This pardon comes at a time when Mr. Trump has been pressuring Venezuela in recent days, accusing its government of drug trafficking.
