Dior accused of racism over its advertisement in China

The luxury goods brand Dior has been accused of racism on Chinese social media for displaying an ad featuring an East Asian model pulling the corners of her eyes.

The French company posted this ad on its Instagram account earlier this week but removed it shortly afterward.

Chinese citizens have become increasingly sensitive on social media to how Chinese people are portrayed in media and social networks, amid rising nationalist sentiments in the country.

The controversial image was released seven days ago to promote Dior’s new makeup collection. The ad shows a model pulling the corners of her eyes, with the caption ‘Discover your feline fierceness’ underneath.

This image was then widely shared on Chinese social media with a hashtag accusing Dior of racism against Asians.

China’s state newspaper, Global Times, has also published a note demanding an apology from Dior.
