Escalation of tensions between Israeli officials and the United Nations
Following Antonio Guterres’ remarks in the Security Council, various Israeli officials strongly criticized him
Mr. Guterres stated during the Security Council meeting on Tuesday that Hamas’ attack on Israel on October 15, which resulted in the deaths of over 1,400 Israelis, did not occur without prior provocation and in a vacuum. He also mentioned the 56-year occupation of Palestinian territories by Israel.
Mr. Guterres’ statements angered the Israeli Foreign Minister, Eli Cohen, who emphasized that there is no reason or justification for such massacres. He addressed Mr. Guterres, saying, ‘In which world do you live?’ Mr. Cohen also canceled his scheduled meeting with Mr. Guterres.
Now, the Israeli Ambassador to the United Nations has confirmed his country’s decision to refrain from issuing visas for UN officials. This decision was made after the visa request of Martin Griffiths, the Deputy Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs, was rejected.
