The Expediency Discernment Council agreed to Iran’s accession to the Palermo Convention
On Wednesday, May 14, the Expediency Discernment Council finally agreed to the conditional accession of the Islamic Republic of Iran to the United Nations Convention against Transnational Organized Crime, known as the Palermo Convention.
The accession of the Islamic Republic to this international treaty is considered the first step for Iran to join the Financial Action Task Force (FATF).
After the Palermo Convention, if the Islamic Consultative Assembly or the Expediency Discernment Council votes for accession to the Convention on the Suppression of the Financing of Terrorism, known as CFT, the path for the Islamic Republic to join the FATF will be possible.
The Islamic Republic’s failure to join these international treaties has resulted in severe restrictions on Iran’s monetary and financial system.
Core regime officials say joining the Financial Action Task Force would hinder the Islamic Republic’s financial support for organizations like the Lebanese militias.
Iran is on the FATF blacklist.
