Fact-Finding Committee Head Identifies Perpetrators of Crimes Against Humanity in Iran Protest Suppression

The head of the fact-finding committee knows the names of those responsible for crimes against humanity in the suppression of protests in Iran.

Sara Hossain, the head of the United Nations Human Rights Council’s fact-finding committee, discussed details of the committee’s 580-page report regarding the suppression of protests in Iran during an interview with the French weekly Le Point. This report was prepared after examining more than 27,000 documents and conducting 133 interviews with witnesses and victims of these events.

The fact-finding committee was established in November 2022 following the vote of 47 member countries of the United Nations Human Rights Council to investigate allegations of human rights violations during the suppression of public protests that year in Iran. For a year and a half, it gathered evidence and documents regarding the actions of the Iranian government in suppressing protesters and the deaths of at least 551 people, including 49 women and 68 children, during this crackdown.

From the outset, Iran opposed the formation of this committee and did not allow its members, including Sara Hossain, a lawyer from the Supreme Court of Bangladesh; Shaheen Sardar Ali, a Pakistani law professor; and Viviana Krsticevic, an Argentine lawyer and executive director of the Center for Justice and International Law in the United States, to travel to Iran.
