Fars News Agency reports that the death penalty sentence for the police commander of Bandar Anzali is not final and the case is set to be reviewed.
Fars News Agency states that in its follow-ups with judicial authorities, it has been clarified that the death penalty sentence for Jafar Javanmardi is not final, and due to multiple deficiencies, the case is to be reviewed again.
During the protests of 2022, Jafar Javanmardi, the police commander of Bandar Anzali, fatally shot Mehran Samak, a 27-year-old man who had celebrated Iran’s victory over the USA in the World Cup in Qatar.
Fars News Agency wrote that many believe that since this incident occurred during a police mission and amidst riots, a harsh sentence issued by the judge will practically weaken the police.
The lawyer of Mehran Samak’s family told Shargh Network that a court in Qazvin had sentenced the former police commander of Bandar Anzali to death for intentional murder, with Jafar Javanmardi being the main suspect in this case.
Therefore, according to the report, judicial authorities assured that the current sentence is not executable, and a more comprehensive review should be conducted upon completing the case.
The Iranian Judiciary itself has not expressed any opinion on this matter.
The Islamic Republic uses the term ‘riots’ to refer to popular protests.
