Former diplomat warns sanctions and war can happen simultaneously

Mostafa Zehrani, a former diplomat of the Islamic Republic in New York, pointed to the possibility of European countries activating the snapback mechanism, saying we should not be comforted by the notion that if the snapback mechanism is triggered, then no war will occur.

In an interview with Entekhab, Zehrani said we have reached a point where if previously we said that the snapback mechanism would prevent the enemy from waging war against you because it is reinstating economic sanctions, and these economic sanctions, whether aimed at behavior change or destabilization, were said to make war no longer legitimate, now we have reached a point where the snapback mechanism can be implemented and war against you can occur simultaneously.

He emphasized that no one should be comforted by the idea that if the snapback mechanism is activated, then there will be no war.

The European countries that are part of the JCPOA have warned Tehran that if the Islamic Republic cannot reach an agreement regarding its nuclear program with the US and Western countries, they will activate the snapback mechanism, and with its activation, all UN and EU sanctions will return.
