Gathering of women’s rights activists in Baghdad following the murder of a famous blogger by her father
A group of women’s rights activists in Iraq today held a demonstration in the city of Baghdad, demanding a law to combat domestic violence
According to Agence France-Presse, Tayba al-Ali, a well-known Iraqi blogger who was also active on YouTube, was suffocated by her father while she was asleep on January 31st and died
The death of this young woman, which occurred in the city of Diwaniyah in Iraq’s Qadisiyyah province, sparked a wave of sorrow and anger in Iraq, and raised concerns about the lack of sufficient laws to combat violence against women, especially domestic violence and what is known as honor killings
The girl’s father was later arrested and confessed to killing his daughter at the police station
Today, Iraqi security forces prevented women from gathering in front of the building of the Supreme Judicial Council of Iraq, and the protesting women instead gathered on a street leading to this building
The protesters held placards that read: Stop killing women. We want laws that protect women, especially laws against domestic violence
