German Chancellor: The Iranian government’s days are numbered

Friedrich Merz, the German Chancellor, said on Wednesday, January 27, referring to the violent suppression of protests in Iran, that the Iranian government’s days are numbered.

In a joint press conference with the Romanian Prime Minister, he told reporters that a government that can only stay in power through sheer violence and instilling fear among its population has its days counted.

Merz added that it might be a matter of weeks, but this government has no legitimacy to run the country.

The German Chancellor had previously, on January 13, shortly after the widespread protests began in Iran, described the Islamic Republic’s resort to violence to remain in power as a sign of the end for this government.
