German Foreign Minister: There is no legal basis for labeling the IRGC as terrorist in the EU

On Monday, February 20, the German Foreign Minister responded to the requests of opponents of the Islamic Republic to label the IRGC as a terrorist organization, stating that there is no legal basis in the European Union for labeling the IRGC as terrorist.

According to Reuters, Annalena Baerbock said that EU legal experts have announced that the union currently has no legal basis to place the IRGC on the terrorist list.

She made these remarks at the end of the monthly meeting of EU foreign ministers in Brussels, speaking to reporters.

The German Foreign Minister’s statements echo the views of Josep Borrell, the EU’s foreign policy chief, who said last month that you cannot call someone a terrorist just because you don’t like them.

Mr. Borrell added that if the EU places the IRGC on the terrorist list without meeting the legal requirements, a court in one of the union’s countries might challenge and overturn the decision.
