Global Poverty Index report: Two-thirds of Afghans were poor over the past two years
The latest update of the Multidimensional Poverty Index (MPI) shows that 1.1 billion people worldwide live in multidimensional poverty, with nearly half a billion of them residing in countries and regions affected by conflict and unrest.
This year’s Multidimensional Poverty Index (MPI) report, jointly prepared by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the Oxford Poverty and Human Development Initiative (OPHI) based at the University of Oxford, was released on Thursday.
This statistical study examined the state of multidimensional poverty in 112 countries, home to 6.3 billion people, revealing that 1.1 billion people worldwide live in severe poverty, and 40% of them live in countries experiencing war or fragile peace and security.
Achim Steiner, Director of the United Nations Development Programme, stated that conflicts have intensified and increased in recent years, casualties have reached new highs, and millions have been displaced. These factors have caused widespread disruption to people’s lives and livelihoods.
