The head of the Environmental Protection Organization: The water level of the Caspian Sea is decreasing
The head of Iran’s Environmental Protection Organization said that Iran’s neighboring countries have blocked the inflows to the Caspian Sea, and in addition, due to reduced rainfall, the sea level is decreasing.
Ali Salajegheh explained to ISNA about the decrease in water in the Caspian Sea, stating that the inflows to the Caspian Sea have been blocked by neighboring countries, especially the inflow of the Volga River.
Mr. Salajegheh continued, expressing hope that neighboring countries will reach an agreement and release the water rights so that water can reach the Caspian Sea. There is also a possibility that rainfall this fall will be better.
He noted that Iran is pursuing the pollution of the Caspian Sea within the framework of the Tehran Convention and continued, expressing hope that within the framework of the Tehran Convention, both the water rights and pollution issues can be resolved.
The head of Iran’s Environmental Protection Organization said that the Caspian Sea’s neighboring countries have no issues with implementing joint projects, but there is a problem with establishing the Convention’s secretariat. If this problem is resolved, the projects can be utilized.
