Holding of Eid al-Fitr prayers in Sunni-populated regions and provinces of Iran
The office of Khamenei, the Supreme Leader of the Islamic Republic of Iran, declared Saturday, April 22, as Eid al-Fitr, but the Eid prayers were held in Zahedan and other Sunni-populated areas of the country, including in Turkmen Sahra.
The Board of Trustees of the mystical seminary of Qarablagh in Golestan Province had issued an announcement stating that the Eid prayer would be held on Friday, April 21.
A Turkmen cleric who participated in the Eid al-Fitr prayer in Qarablagh and wished to remain anonymous told Deutsche Welle that despite the fact that Sunnis do not believe in the Supreme Leader, significant efforts were made to comply with Ali Khamenei’s decree, and some government-affiliated Sunni clerics exerted influence to hold the Eid prayer on Saturday.
In videos shared on social media, thousands of Sunni Turkmen responded to this call and participated in the Eid al-Fitr prayer ceremony.
Images from the Eid al-Fitr ceremony in the town of Galikesh, attended by Mowlavi Hossein Gorgij at the Farooqiyeh seminary in Galikesh, have also been published.
