The Islamic Republic tripled its gas exports to Turkey in mid-winter amid a peak gas shortage.

New statistics from Turkey’s Energy Market Regulatory Authority show that the Islamic Republic tripled its gas exports to Turkey in mid-winter amid a peak gas shortage.

According to this report, published on Friday, March 30th, on the website of this body affiliated with Turkey’s Ministry of Energy, Iran delivered over 871 million cubic meters of gas to Turkey in January this year (December 22 to January 20), which is 202 percent more than the same month last year.

It is not exactly clear why, while Iran had halted gas exports to Turkey in some summer and autumn months, it dramatically increased exports to Turkey during the peak winter gas consumption and widespread shortage.

In total, Iran delivered 52 billion cubic meters of gas to Turkey last year, which is 46 percent less than in 2022.

In January this year, Russia, the United States, and Azerbaijan were the largest gas exporters to Turkey, and Iran ranked fourth with a 13 percent share.
