International Amnesty Report: Kurdish Iraq Authorities Fail to Address Women's Complaints

Amnesty International reports that authorities in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq are failing to address complaints from women.

Amnesty International says in a report that women and girls who fall victim to domestic violence in Kurdistan Region of Iraq face serious obstacles when filing complaints and seeking government support.

The human rights organization states that perpetrators of murder, sexual assault, and physical violence against women in the Kurdish autonomous region in northern Iraq often go unpunished, and the judicial system operates in a way that gives the offenders a sense of impunity.

The Amnesty International report indicates that similar signs are seen in other parts of Iraq.

In the first four months of the current year, out of 14,000 complaints registered regarding domestic violence across Iraq, only about a hundred cases have resulted in convictions.
