iPhone import tariffs announced
Complete Taghvainejad, the Secretary of the Cabinet, announced the new iPhone import tariffs on Sunday, November 4th, stating that the import duty for Apple phones this year is set at 15% for phones over $600 in commercial procedures and 30% in other procedures.
The Islamic Republic News Agency (IRNA), quoting the Secretary of the Cabinet, also announced that according to the Cabinet’s resolution, the import duty for Apple phones $600 and below is set at 5% in commercial procedures and 6% in other procedures.
This tariff was announced while earlier there were reports about a 96% tariff for importing Apple phones, which sparked a wave of critical reactions on social networks.
Abdolnaser Hemmati, the Minister of Economy, said on Saturday that the government’s resolution to impose a 96% tariff on iPhone imports was not our resolution, and the new tariff will likely be close to 30%.
Earlier, in a Cabinet resolution published on November 1st that provoked reactions, the commercial profit for iPhone imports was set at 96%, meaning that applicants would have to pay up to twice the original price after the import ban is lifted.
