The Iranian Presidency website reported that Pezeshkian declined Egypt’s invitation to attend the Gaza peace summit.
The Iranian Presidency website announced that Massoud Pezeshkian, the President, did not accept the official invitation from the Egyptian government to participate in the international Gaza peace summit in Sharm El Sheikh.
Abbas Araghchi, Iran’s Foreign Minister, said in yesterday’s cabinet meeting that an official invitation from Egypt for the President to attend the Sharm El Sheikh summit was received, but the Islamic Republic of Iran declined it. He added that subsequently, an invitation was also sent from Cairo for the Iranian Foreign Minister to attend.
It is still unclear whether Araghchi will attend the summit on behalf of Iran or not.
While there has been no official reaction from the Egyptian or American governments on this matter, the city of Sharm El Sheikh is preparing to host the international Gaza peace summit on Monday.
It is expected that leaders from over 20 countries will participate in this summit, but Israel and Hamas have announced that they will not send representatives to the meeting.
The summit is being held concurrently with the start of humanitarian aid entering Gaza and preparations for the exchange of Israeli hostages with Palestinian prisoners.
