Iran Withdraws from Hosting the Asian Cup
According to the Asian Football Confederation, Iran withdrew from hosting the 2027 Asian Cup four days ago. The AFC Executive Committee meeting was held on Monday in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. The most important decision of this meeting was selecting Qatar as the host for the 2023 Asian Cup instead of China, a country that had announced its withdrawal from hosting the tournament months ago due to the outbreak of the coronavirus.
The AFC website, while announcing this news, also revealed another new development. Based on this, India and Saudi Arabia have been introduced as the two final candidates to host the 2027 Asian Cup. The final decision between these two countries will be made in February 2023. Meanwhile, according to the AFC website, Iran, another candidate for hosting the 2027 Asian Cup, has withdrawn from its decision.
The Iranian Football Federation was interested in hosting the 2027 Asian Cup and initiated a competition with Saudi Arabia, Qatar, and India by submitting documents to the AFC. With Qatar being selected for 2023, it automatically stepped down from hosting in 2027. However, according to the AFC, Iran officially withdrew from hosting the 2027 Asian Cup on October 13. This is despite the fact that the Iranian Football Federation had not released any information regarding this matter.
