Iran’s renewed attempt to purchase jet aircraft from Brazil

According to the Folha de São Paulo newspaper, Iran is once again attempting to purchase jet aircraft from Brazil.

The newspaper wrote that Hossein Gharibi, Iran’s ambassador to Brazil, has requested a meeting with Geraldo Alckmin, Brazil’s Vice President and Minister of Industry and Trade, to discuss bilateral relations.

Folha wrote that Iran had old and friendly relations with the current President Lula da Silva during his previous presidency from 2003 to 2011, and Iranian diplomats believe that now that he is back in office, bilateral relations can be enhanced, even though U.S. President Joe Biden has maintained the sanctions on Iran.

According to reports, Iran attempted to purchase jets from Brazil in 2016, and even a fighter jet was sent to Iran for testing. However, with the election of Donald Trump, who reinstated Iran’s sanctions, this purchase was halted, and Embraer stopped negotiations with Iran out of fear of sanctions.
