Ismail Baghaei: The UN Secretary-General’s approach is misleading and dangerous

Ismail Baghaei, spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Islamic Republic, criticized Antonio Guterres’ approach regarding the role of the United Nations and said that reducing the mission of this organization to preventing war between superpowers is a misleading and dangerous approach.

Baghaei, referring to the views of Dag Hammarskjöld, a former UN Secretary-General, wrote that this organization should not become a mechanism serving the diplomacy of major powers and should also be a tool for protecting the security of smaller countries.

He claimed that such an interpretation of the UN Charter undermines the importance of the majority of member countries and could justify wars and cover up the actions of major powers against other countries.

Baghaei, referring to the wars and crises in Korea, Vietnam, Congo, Iraq, Afghanistan, Yemen, Sudan, and Gaza, criticized the UN Secretary-General’s stance in the final months of his term.
