Italy’s Right-Wingers Get Acquainted with the Realities of Governance

Now that Giorgia Meloni has taken the seat of Prime Minister of her country, signs of her and her supporting faction’s efforts to align their policies with the realities of governing a country like Italy are gradually emerging. Meloni has entrusted economic positions to figures who are sometimes moderate, experienced, and non-controversial. In foreign policy, she has made serious efforts to present herself as a stable ally of the European Union. She has emphasized the continuation of the previous government’s policies towards Russia and alignment with Europe and the United States in supporting Ukrainians.

However, it should be noted that fundamentally, Meloni and her party, along with her two extremist allied factions, have serious plans for change in Italy’s politics and society, and they will pursue these plans subtly.

Anti-immigration policies should be considered one of the first programs likely to manifest in laws and implementation.

Beyond this, the deep and structural ties of the three united right-wing factions in the current Italian government with international right-wing movements, one end of which is connected to Moscow, will certainly cause trouble for Europe and the United States.
