Joe Biden’s New Plan for Granting U.S. Citizenship to Immigrants
Joe Biden, the President of the United States, in a move that could be costly in an election year, has provided the opportunity for hundreds of thousands of immigrants with unclear residency status to receive U.S. citizenship.
One of the goals of this plan could be to balance Mr. Biden’s decision two weeks ago to take a tougher stance on immigrants at the southern borders of the United States, which, in addition to immigrant rights organizations, also caused dissatisfaction among many Democratic lawmakers.
The White House announced on Tuesday, June 19, that in the coming months, the U.S. government will allow a specific group of spouses of U.S. citizens, who currently have uncertain residency status, to apply for residency and ultimately U.S. citizenship.
According to senior U.S. government officials, this decision could include about half a million people.
The main conditions for benefiting from these regulations are residing in the U.S. for at least 10 years and being married to a U.S. citizen.
