Josep Borrell of the European Union cannot currently declare the IRGC as terrorist.

Josep Borrell, the EU’s foreign policy chief, said in an interview with Le Monde that we have repeatedly discussed adding the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps to the list of terrorist organizations, which was something that former US President Donald Trump did. However, the EU judiciary must determine that the IRGC has committed a terrorist act, and currently, this is not the case. Borrell, the EU’s foreign policy chief, stated that the EU cannot declare the IRGC as terrorist under current conditions. Regarding new sanctions against Tehran, he said that this action first requires the existence of things that can be sanctioned. Borrell also emphasized that in light of a potential Israeli response to an attack by Iran with drones and missiles, it is in everyone’s interest to avoid a regional confrontation.
