Kianoush Sanjari announced the sale of his kidney.

Kianoush Sanjari, a journalist and former political prisoner, has posted an advertisement for selling his kidney at a free market price on his social media page on X.

He, who has a history of arrest, torture, and imprisonment in November 2023, had previously announced selling his X page due to being laid off and struggling with livelihood because of his dissent, poverty, and the need to buy provisions and cover medical expenses.

Buying and selling kidneys in Iran due to financial difficulties is a phenomenon with a precedent, especially in recent years. Many paper advertisements with headlines like ‘urgent need,’ along with blood type, phone numbers, and reasons for the sale, can be seen around and at the entrances of some hospitals specializing in organ transplants.

Among the reasons for selling body parts mentioned in most of these ads are covering rent or down payment for a house, buying a car, or gathering funds for the heavy medical expenses of a close relative.

According to published reports, the price of selling a kidney in Iran can range from 80 million in the Iranian Kidney Association to 500 million on the black market, depending on age, health, and blood type.
