Lavrov: Ukraine’s membership in NATO is a direct threat to Russia

Sergey Lavrov, the Russian Foreign Minister, announced after negotiations with the American side in Riyadh that the potential joining of Ukraine to NATO is considered a direct threat to Russia.

He described this issue as one of the main reasons for Moscow’s invasion of Ukraine.

Mr. Lavrov said, today we have clearly explained this issue to our friends, and Mr. Putin has repeatedly clarified that NATO’s efforts to bring Ukraine under the umbrella of this alliance are considered a direct threat to Russia’s sovereignty and interests.

He added that the deployment of any military forces in Ukraine under the NATO or European Union flag is unacceptable to Russia, and such an action will not be permitted.
