The President of Lebanon signed the border agreement with Israel

Michel Aoun, the President of Lebanon, signed an important agreement on Thursday, mediated by the United States, to delineate the maritime borders of his country with Israel.

Israel is also expected to sign this agreement in the coming hours, which indicates a slight shift from the path of hostility between the parties. This agreement paves the way for energy exploration in the offshore area of the two countries and removes a potential source of conflict between Israel and Hezbollah in Lebanon. It could also help alleviate Lebanon’s economic crisis.

Elias Bou Saab, the Lebanese negotiator, said that this agreement marks the beginning of a new era, and the signed text of the agreement will be handed over to American officials late Thursday at Naqoura, the southernmost border point of Lebanon.
