Mark Rutte will be the next NATO Secretary General.

The path to appoint Mark Rutte as the next Secretary General of NATO cleared after months of deadlock. Romania, the latest NATO member country, announced that it will no longer resist the appointment of the former Dutch Prime Minister to this high position. The Presidential Office in Bucharest announced that Klaus Iohannis, the President of Romania, has withdrawn his candidacy.

Romania has now declared its support for Rutte’s candidacy. This decision was made by the Supreme Council of National Defense, chaired by Iohannis.
