Mauritius: We will prevent Iran and China’s influence if Chagos Archipelago is returned
The Mauritian government says that if it gains control of the Chagos Archipelago, it guarantees to keep Iran and China away from these areas.
According to the British newspaper The Telegraph, Mauritian Foreign Minister Dhananjay Ramgoolam made these statements on Tuesday, January 29, in response to concerns expressed by some Republican figures close to Donald Trump.
In recent days, several influential figures allied with Donald Trump have asked him to annul the agreement between Britain and the Mauritian government regarding the transfer of the Chagos Archipelago in the Indian Ocean, due to the possibility of Iranian espionage against the US military.
However, the Mauritian Foreign Minister argued that Mauritius’s sovereignty over this archipelago would position his country to prevent the influence of others in areas hosting Western military bases.
This senior Mauritian diplomat stated that such an action would benefit the United States, Britain, and Mauritius.
