Merz: We have no reason to defend Germany’s military spending

Friedrich Merz, the Chancellor of Germany, in response to Donald Trump’s criticism of Berlin’s defense spending, said that Germany will double its defense budget within four years and has no reason to feel inferior to any country.

He added that as the largest member of the European Union, Germany has a special responsibility towards the security of this continent.

Trump had previously criticized NATO members’ share of defense spending, saying that the United States has shouldered the main burden of providing security for this alliance, and that this situation is ridiculous.
