Middle East Relations and US Elections
Both the Democratic and Republican parties in the US find themselves in challenging foreign policy situations where they must prove themselves.
This will become clearer when Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu speaks at a joint session of the US Congress.
While Joe Biden’s running mate Kamala Harris may have some disagreements with Donald Trump on certain issues, she aligns with him on supporting Netanyahu’s extremist positions, including endorsing Israel’s continued war on Gaza until Hamas is completely destroyed.
Biden and Harris face a tough task in responding to Netanyahu’s statements without incurring costs for their party in the polls.
In a situation where Trump can attract a group of Jews who traditionally voted for Democrats, a Gallup poll shows that millions of Americans, especially Muslims and many Jews, oppose Netanyahu’s extremist positions.
However, among these millions of voters, many have become disillusioned with the Biden administration’s failure to negotiate a ceasefire, leading to their disappointment with this government.
Although these individuals may not vote for Trump, they may not show up at the polls altogether, which could be crucial in swing states.
However, Iran’s new president, Masoud Pezeshkian, could also bring about transformative changes in mobilizing these individuals to participate in the voting booths.
Since winning, Pezeshkian has cautiously interpreted his victories in a nuanced manner. He has clearly shown that he is not seeking to secularize the government but rather aims for all Iranians to have dignity to create meaning in their lives.
His most significant action so far was the publication of a note titled ‘A Message to the New World,’ which was published in English in the Tehran Times.
In this note, Pezeshkian writes that we welcome sincere efforts to reduce tensions and we will respond honestly to honesty.
These statements can be seen as Iran’s willingness to reduce the threat of nuclear war by opening Iran’s nuclear facilities to international inspectors in exchange for opening global markets to Iranian products and goods for Iranian consumers.
What is exactly perceived from the position of the medical professionals is what the Biden administration should demonstrate as a valid response to Netanyahu’s statements in front of Congress, against the enthusiasm that Trump and Pence will show for Netanyahu, Antony Blinken, the Secretary of State, is in a position to announce a new approach to peace in the Middle East.
To ensure Biden and Harris, they should not express absolute confidence in the preliminary negotiations they are conducting with medical professionals, negotiations that could significantly reduce the risk of nuclear war between Iran and Israel.
This will only be practical if the Harris team can win the November elections and, of course, if the medical professionals can surpass the resistance of their staunch religious opponents.
In any case, isn’t it logical for Americans to allow the government to try the path to this important transformation instead of letting Trump and Pence ruin this chance? But only in this way can the American people act by quickly contacting Iran and accompanying Blinken in announcing the intentions of the two countries to explore new paths with the aim of achieving peace in the Middle East.
