NATO’s Request from Members to Commit to Annual Aid for Ukraine

Jens Stoltenberg, the Secretary General of NATO, has called for member countries of this defense alliance to commit to allocating at least 40 billion euros annually to aid Ukraine.

On Friday, May 31st, at the end of the foreign ministers’ meeting in Prague, the NATO Secretary General stated that Ukraine needs long-term foresight.

According to Stoltenberg, the proposed 40 billion euros is equivalent to the amount that member countries have collectively raised annually since the start of Russia’s aggression against Ukraine in February 2022.

The Norwegian representative at this meeting requested that Ukraine be supported annually and that this support continue as long as necessary.

NATO member countries must now discuss and exchange views on the details of aid to Ukraine.

In April of this year, coinciding with the 75th anniversary of NATO’s founding, Stoltenberg proposed NATO military aid to Ukraine worth 100 billion euros over the next five years, but this initiative did not receive much support.
